What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that attacks and damages the small intestine. When gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley) enters the system, an immune response occurs, damaging the villi, tiny fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. Villi promote nutrient absorption and when they become compromised, malnourishment can occur and lead to additional serious health problems.
Symptoms of Celiac Disease
Symptoms of celiac disease vary from person to person and may not be confined to the digestive system, therefore reaching other parts of the body. Children and infants can often experience different symptoms than adults which may include diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, vomiting, discomfort and bloating in the abdominal area, constipation, delayed puberty, irritability or changes in stool (pale in color or very foul).
The most common symptoms for adults can include:
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Vomiting
- Abdominal bloating and gas
