What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as IBS, is a functional gastrointestinal disorder affecting the large intestine. IBS can cause discomfort and distress for someone experiencing symptoms which can vary from person to person. A person with IBS can notice mucus in the stool, repeated changes in bowel movements (diarrhea or constipation), a constant feeling of needing to have a bowel movement or abdominal discomfort. While IBS is a common condition, there are no specific causes for IBS, and is known to occur more often in women. If you believe you may be suffering with IBS, it is important to have an examination to rule out any other causes of symptoms and figure out the best way to manage it.
Common Symptoms of IBS Include:
- Abdominal pain
- Cramping
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Gas
- Bloating
Treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome Can Include:
- Medications (this can include anti-diarrheal or antidepressants)
- Lifestyle or behavioral changes
- Dietary changes
Relief from IBS can be provided from one or more treatment options. The exact course of treatment will depend on the type and severity of symptoms.
