What is Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux occurs when acid in the stomach backs up into the esophagus. This backflow of acid can irritate the lining of the esophagus and cause general discomfort or a burning sensation otherwise known as heart burn. Gastroespohageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, may be diagnosed when this situation becomes chronic. If left untreated, GERD can lead to damage in the esophagus causing inflammation, scarring or narrowing.
Common Symptoms of GERD Include:
- Regurgitation of food or sour, bitter acid in the throat or mouth
- Problems with swallowing
- Chronic heartburn
- Nausea
- Dry cough or wheezing
- Stomach pain
- Sore throat
Sometimes the symptoms of a heart attack can be mistaken for heartburn. View the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and call 911 immediately if you think you are experiencing any of these symptoms.
Treatment Options for GERD Include:
- Medications that include antacids or acid inhibitors
- Lifestyle changes
- Surgical options that may be recommended if medications or lifestyle changes do not resolve symptoms, or if repair needs to be made
